Arunachal Pradesh has presently a total of Eight wildlife sanctuaries, one orchid sanctuary, and two National Parks protected by Arunachal Pradesh & central government.
Arunachal Pradesh very is rich in flora and fauna, almost 60% of the state is covered with evergreen forests. The state has seven types of forests –
- Tropical forest
- Sub-Tropical forest
- Pine forest
- Temperate forest
- Alpine forest
- Bamboo forest
- Degraded forest
The state is home to a variety of finer species of orchids, Oaks, medicinal plants, canes, and bamboo. Arunachal Pradesh has a rich wildlife population and is home to Mithun, elephant, tiger, leopard, musk deer, wild buffalo, etc.

Wildlife Sanctuaries of Arunachal Pradesh
The National parks and wildlife sanctuaries of Arunachal Pradesh are managed by the Department of Environment and forest.
The fauna of Arunachal Pradesh is equally rich with as many as 25 species of mammals in schedule -1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary
It is situated in the Pakke Kessang district. The area of the national park is 862 sq. km. Wildlife: Elephant, Tiger, Barking deer, Gour, Leopard, Hornbill, etc. Renamed Pakke on 23rd April 2002 as Tiger Reserve Sanctuary and also called “Pakke Tiger Reserve“.
Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary
It is situated in the Papum Pare district. The area of the national park is 140.30 sq. km. Wildlife: Elephant, Tiger, Barking Deer, Leopard, and various bird species and orchid species.
Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary:
It is situated in the East Siang district, formerly called Lali Mehar. The area of the national park is190 sq. km. Wildlife: Hogdeer, Lispid bear, endemic and migratory birds, and migratory water birds.
Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary:
It is situated in the Lower Dibang Valley and Lohit districts. The area of the national park is 281.5 sq. km. Wildlife: Hoolock, Gibbon, Tiger, Elephant, Leopard, etc.
Kane Wildlife Sanctuary:
It is situated in the West Siang district. The area of the national park is 55 sq. km and it is the smallest national park in the state. Wildlife: Elephant, Mall cat, Deer, etc.
Eagle’s Nest Wildlife Sanctuary:
It is situated in the West Kameng district. The area of the national park is 217 sq. km. Wildlife: Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Goral, Red pardor, etc. Especially famous for a rare bird Begun Lischichla discovered in 2006.
Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary:
It is situated in the Lohit district. The area of the national park is 783 sq. km. Wildlife: Gibbon, Tiger, Leopard, Takin, etc.
Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary:
It is situated in the Dibang Valley district. The area of the national park is 4149 sq. km and it is the largest wildlife sanctuary in the state. Wildlife: Musk deer, Takin, Black bear, Leopard, Khali, and many other rare birds.
Sessa Orchid Sanctuary:
It is situated in the West Kameng district. The area of the national park is 100 sq. km. A variety of Orchids and some wildlife like Pheasant, Crow, Goral, etc. are found at Tipi near Sessa. There is an orchidarium at Tipi inaugurated by K.AA Raja, Lt. Governor on 16th August 1972
