Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi also known as Hollongi Airport or Itanagar Airport is the biggest airport in Arunachal Pradesh. The Airport is situated at Hollongi, a distance of 25 km from the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar in the Papum Pare district.
The International Air Transport Association(IATA) code of Donyi Polo Airport is HGI and its International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) code is VEHO. After the detailed project report (DPR) of the Airport prepared by AAI and the laying of the project’s foundation stone in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the contract for construction work of the project was given to Dineshchandra R. Agrawal Infracon Private Limited (DRA Infracon), in February 2020.
The Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 19th November 2022 at Hollongi, Arunachal Pradesh.
State Government recommend the name of the Greenfield Airport “Donyi Polo Airport” to dedicate and symbolize the indigenous of Arunachal Pradesh (Donyi means Sun, Polo means Moon), and the name was approved on 2nd November 2022 by the union cabinet.
After changing the name of the greenfield airport at Hollongi to “Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar“, the native of Hollongi village and Hollongi Indigenous Forum demanded keeping the name “Donyio Polo Airport, Hollongi” as they believe it hurts the sentiments of the local people of Hollongi by removing “Hollongi” word from it.
Donyi polo Airport has a magnificent bamboo welcome gate, designed by bamboo artisans led by young Arunachalee architect, Aroty Panyang, the gate is 23 feet high, 82 feet wide built in the area of 2500 square feet with cane and bamboo.
The design of the gate is inspired by Arunachal Pradesh’s state bird – The Great Hornbill and represents the significance of Arunachal’s first full-fledged commercial Airport at Hollongi, Arunachal Pradesh.

History of Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar
The Project of the Airport was proposed more than a decade ago and Shri Shivraj Patil, then home minister, laid the foundation stone for the project on 20 February 2007.
At that time, Banderdewa, a 30km distance from Itanagar had been chosen by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh as a suitable location for the Airport Project.
After inspecting and surveying the location chosen by the state government, the technical committee of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) rejected the project location. They recommended Hollongi, situated 25 km south of Itanagar as a suitable alternative site for the project in the year 2011.
According to AAI, Hollongi is a better site for the project on the grounds of operational safety, lower costs of construction of the Airport, and scope of future expansion.
The estimated cost for the construction project was ₹980 crore at site Banderdewa, as against ₹650 crore for the Hollongi site.
This difference and conflict between AAI and the government of Arunachal Pradesh caused a dispute that resulted in the construction of the project getting delayed and held for many years.
In 2012, the Prime Minister’s Office(PMO) intervened in the case and ended the dispute between the state government and AAI, and finalized the project’s site as Hollongi.
A New Foundation stone for the project was laid during the project construction of Hollongi as Hollongi Airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 2019 and the airport was successfully inaugurated on 19th November 2022 as the new official name “Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar by Prime Minister himself.
Indigo Airlines started their service for the first time as a commercial flight from the airport on 28th November 2022.
