Arunachal Pradesh is the largest state of seven sister states of northeast India. Arunachal Pradesh is one of the most beautiful places on the earth.
Arunachal means: Arun (sun) and Achal (Surya-ka-Achal, the place from where the sun seems to be rising), that’s the reason Arunachal Pradesh is called “The Land of the rising sun in India“.
The weather and the climate of Arunachal Pradesh are quite different from the rest of the country. The state is situated on the extreme northeastern tip of the Union of India in the Trans-Himalayan region.
The climate of the state is dominated by the Himalayan system and the attitudinal variations. Almost 80% of the state is covered with mountains and forests. Therefore, Arunachal Pradesh is popularly known as “The Land of the Dawnlit Mountains“.
History of Arunachal Pradesh
Its former name was NEFA ( North-East Frontier Agency), being a north-east frontier area it was known as NEFA. This region acquired an independent political status and union territory status on January 20, 1972, and was renamed Arunachal Pradesh.
The name was suggested by Shri B Das Shastri and formally announced by Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, then the Prime Minister of India at Ziro, Headquarter of the Subansiri district (Now H. Q of Lower Subansiri district).
The state of Arunachal Pradesh bill was passed by the parliament in 1986 and Arunachal Pradesh became a full-fledged state on 20th February 1987.
Formally, Shillong (now in Meghalaya) was the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, but the capital was shifted from Shillong to Itanagar on 1st June 1974. On 20th February 1987, Arunachal Pradesh became the 24th state of the Indian union. So Arunachal Pradesh celebrates this day (24th February) as “Statehood Day“
